My kids Sino and Liby always love to explore Science through experiments.

Both like to do a lot of hands on activities, so we make lot of models and experiment everything as a part of learning.

This blog is created to showcase our models and projects which we did with simple household materials on various occasions.

Future Farming- Aquaphonics - Growing plants along with fish!

This project won first prize in the Science Fair Competition 2016.(VIGYAAN) - a megaevent  held by Vellammal Bodhi campus Chennai on 15th October.
This is a tabletop simple and cheap aquaponics system where we can grow greens along with fish  needed for a family of four. We have grown millets for our birds.

The main idea of our Aquaponic project is to develop A NUTRIENT AND WATER EFFICIENT SYSTEM to produce horticultural crops using fish waste. We designed in such a way to produce vegetables  and lettuces and fish in a healthy way.
We used clay pellets instead of soil. These pellets retain water three times more than normal soil. Also we used cotton mesh as a filter.

A motor is used to pump water from the fish tank to the grow bed which has holes through which the cleaned water will return back to the fish tank.

The waste products from the fish are converted into soluble nutrients, which are absorbed by the plants, and allow “clean” water to be returned back to the fish. Thus, it produces valuable fish protein with a minimal pollution of fresh water resources, while at the same time producing horticultural crops.
The best part of this aquaponic system is that  you  can easily convert your aquariums into a  simple aquaponics system.
